The United Nations says that more than 60,000 school-aged children now work on the streets of Kabul to survive. “Some beg. Others polish and mend shoes. Still others sell plastic bottles of water, chewing gum, or newspapers.”

Given the security situation in Afghanistan we do not publish actual names. We will call him Abdul.

A former street child named Abdul completed his first semester of his second year of college in Kabul, Afghanistan last week. Abdul received this recognition with several other students from elementary, high school and college. He has earned many Microsoft certificates and exceptionally high grades at the university here in Kabul, where he is studying Business and Economics. Donations to Two Sparrows Foundation have helped send these children to school.

Abdul is a former street child whose life has been turned around by his drive to rise above his past. He was orphaned when he was four years old. He has since taken his father’s responsibilities as provider by selling all day on the streets of Kabul, Afghanistan. He now supports his entire family including unemployed brothers, sisters and his mother. Abdul is Two Sparrows Foundation’s oldest student receiving economic assistance for college. At 20 he has hopes if sponsored to travel abroad to further his studies.

Two Sparrows Foundation contributions to schools on the child’s behalf allow them to prepare for significantly better jobs for their future. Some of our education and vocational assistance recipients are from the streets, others are from impoverished families, and some just come to us as orphans seeking help. All these children are assessed for vocational training or academic education and learn computer skills and English.

Afghan children and youths between 8 and 20 will be identified by reputable and unbiased non-governmental organizations for inclusion in the Two Sparrows program. These Kabul children and youth and orphans including, for example, orphans of the Afghan National Police killed in the line of duty will be assessed to determine an appropriate level for literacy and language training. Literacy can help these youths and language training in foreign languages can improve their ability to become appropriately employed. The intent is to ensure they are not drawn to the street. Language and literacy training addresses our first priority which is to create programs that help street beggars, orphans and street business children better themselves and allow these children to escape a dangerous life of crime.

Our priority is to help educate academically or vocationally train some of the 35,000 street children who beg or sell small items every day on the streets of Kabul Afghanistan. Many of these children are older but have little or no schooling. This means the schooling will be more intense to allow them to “catch-up” with their peers. For those who achieve foreign language skills, this may involve vocational or academic schooling abroad.
